Maryville, TN: A three-year federal grant, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant, has brought together two innovative entities to focus on the intersection between education and workforce. The $3.5 million grant awarded to NS4ed, LLC will fund the creation of a career exploration and pathway development system to support a core curriculum for students in grades 6-12.
The American Public Education Foundation (APEF) will partner with NS4ed to infuse financial literacy lessons into the curriculum. APEF will build lessons for students in grades 6-12 that empower them to make good financial decisions about their future.
“America is facing a growing epidemic,” said David Pickler, Executive Director of the American Public Education Foundation. “Our nation is rapidly sinking into a sea of debt and financial dependency. Each of us has a responsibility to change this culture, to become accountable partners in preparing our students to make sound financial choices or face the consequences that will undermine America’s future and threaten our economic and national security interests.”
The partnership created between NS4ed and APEF will further connect students with relevant content to increase student motivation. The program will motivate students to develop the skills required for long-term success.
“We’re confident in our ability to support student success and drive economic growth through our collaborative partnership and recent grant award,” stated Dr. Joseph Goins, CEO of NS4ed and Pathway2Careers. “Our ability to help students connect a math problem to a high-value career can change the student’s trajectory in life. By adding financial literacy as an essential element, we can effectively support students on the journey to college and career success.”
The program will also utilize Pathway2Careers curricula to engage students through real-world application of core math concepts demonstrating how each concept is used in authentic on-the-job examples. The curriculum emphasizes high-demand job opportunities answering the familiar question from students, “Why do I need to know this?” or “When will I ever use this?”
